The requirement for an FSSAI license depends on the size and nature of your food business. The FSSAI has categorized food businesses into three types based on their annual turnover and production capacity:
Basic FSSAI Registration:
This is applicable to small-scale food businesses with an annual turnover of up to INR 12 lakhs. This registration is suitable for small businesses such as food stalls, small eateries, and home-based food businesses.
State FSSAI License:
This is required for medium-sized food businesses with an annual turnover between INR 12 lakhs and INR 20 crores. This license is suitable for businesses such as restaurants, hotels, food processors, and medium-scale food manufacturers.
Central FSSAI License:
This is mandatory for large-scale food businesses with an annual turnover exceeding INR 20 crores. It is also require for businesses that engage in import-export of food products, 100% export-oriented units, and large-scale food manufacturers.
It’s important to note that even if your business falls within the exemption limit of INR 12 lakhs, you still need to ensure compliance with food safety and hygiene standards.
