Original invoice under GST

Is the requirement of an original invoice under GST mandatory

Under GST, an original invoice is required for claiming input tax credit (ITC). However, a digital invoice, such as an electronic invoice (e-invoice) or an electronic bill of supply (EBS), is considered as an original invoice if it satisfies the prescribed requirements.

The GST law allows for the use of digital invoices, and the GST Council has introduced the e-invoicing system to facilitate the generation and exchange of digital invoices. E-invoices generated through the e-invoicing system are considered as original invoices and can be used for claiming ITC.

Therefore, it is not necessary to obtain a physical or paper-based original invoice, provided that the digital invoice satisfies the requirements prescribed under the GST law. However, it is important to ensure that the digital invoice is authentic and contains all the necessary details as required by the law.
